There seems to be a problem with NATO. Recently Canada asked for more military support from our European allies to help out in the more active areas of Afghanistan. France originally said yes, but now appears to be backing off. Germany firmly said no. We expected that wishy-washy behavior from the French. They fought like that in WWII and well, it's their proud heritage to surrender. Italy too. Given their military history, I expect them to switch sides soon. But Germany is a real surprise. If there is any country in the European Union that could be shouldering more, it's Germany. They certainly have the proud military heritage, but lack the political will to do the right thing. Which then begs the question: Why should Canada even bother? Clearly our allies don't.
