Welcome to the new Banana Republic of Canuckastan. The old Canada of Lester B. Pearson, Mackenzie King and Sir John A. MacDonald is now a figment of your imagination.
We had a good run, boys. In 1967, we were the envy of the world and it was as though the world was our oyster. Successive Liberal governments and a passive, apathetic populace helped change that. We are the masters of our own demise.
I have never been so ashamed of my country as I am this moment in history. Typically wishy-washy and apathetic, we allowed a separatist party into our parliamentary system in the name of democracy and tolerance. Now that party has thrown its support behind a Liberal/NDP coalition. Why? Because of principles? Because they "lost confidence" in the Conservatives? Wrong, wrong and wrong.
No doubt, when this all shakes out, the Bloc will have secured another billion dollars in transfer payments -- the price required for their support. Principles be damned, for this has very little to do with principles and more to do with shady deals in back rooms. The conversation probably went something like:
"How can I get your support for this coalition?"
"Um, how about an extra $1B in transfer payments?"
"Done!"
"It's been a pleasure."
"No, the pleasure was all mine."
Speculation, perhaps, but something had to be promised. There's always a cost.
And for Canada, the cost is the end of democracy. Consider this: we are on the verge of being led by a Liberal/NDP coalition that, on its on, could not govern because the Conservatives had more votes than the two parties put together. Given a scenario where they could have formed a coalition on their own, it would have been slightly more palatable, but the thing that makes it unacceptable is that they paid off the Bloc to do it. We'll never know all the details, but it is just too obvious to not see it for what it is -- a payoff. An old style one-hand-washes-the-other deal.
This isn't democracy and Canada should be ashamed to have ever let it happen. Power was seized by backroom deals, money and promises. Where is democracy in that?
O, Canada! I'll miss you.
