Mumbai

My Mumbai cartoon was not an easy cartoon for me for some reason. My first thought was to go with an Indian elephant, but the idea of a crying elephant was too cheesy, even by my low standards. I saw that some other cartoonists took that concept and they are welcome to it -- it was awful. My concept was to draw blood splatter that looked like India, however, It worked better in my mind than in the final product. My editorial page editor sent me a note, saying that the Citizen staff were a little confused about the image and could I add an element to make the concept clearer. So, this revised version with the hand hastily added in, was the final product. To which my 7-year-old daughter chimed in "Daddy, the hand is turned the wrong way!" Arghhhh. Everyone's an art critic. My preference was for the following "grunge" version, but I went for a clean graphic look in order for it to look good in both color and black and white. You win some; you lose some.
