You know you've drawn a good cartoon when you inspire other cartoonists to try the same thing in a form of one-upmanship. This one did exactly that and that's OK with me.
Editorial cartoonists typically have low self-esteem, but I haven't met one yet who didn't think he was the best cartoonist working today, with some thinking they're "the best there is, the best there was and the best that's ever gonna be." It's an interesting dichotomy and it creates some strange dynamics when it comes to posting cartoons in the Internet age, some of which is good competition, while some is just an attempt to buttress a fragile ego.
Now onto the cartoon: Apparently, I like drawing boats. I say this because I've noticed I do a good job of them -- for the most part. Every so often, I'll draw the masts on the wrong side and other cartoonists have fun ribbing me over it. But, hey, nothing can beat my
cow with six udders drawing a few years back. If nothing else, I research my subjects well. I take artistic license seriously and often am guilty of moving elements "just because."
The other thing I thought, well after I posted it, was that the cartoon might have been more effective if I had drawn a small pirate boat in the distance.
Arrrrr!!
