I drew this cartoon Friday well before Citibank announced 52,000 layoffs. It is a good example of what might be referred to as gallows humor, since CanWest, the company that owns the Ottawa Citizen, just announced 570 job cuts last week.
These are going to be difficult times for many of us, especially those in the newspaper print business. I refer to it as being on the Titanic and watching the water creep up the deck. Layoffs in newspapers were already happening before this economic crisis hit the front page and editorial cartooning has lost some pretty big names recently.
I remember the last recession too well. The one that occurred in the early 1990s changed newspapers forever, as advertising revenue dried up and budgets shrunk. This one could make that one look like a walk in the park.
How it all plays out is anyone's guess. For those of us in the newspaper industry, its time to wake up and smell the coffee. This means expanding skill sets and thinking about revenue streams. What is certain is that nothing is certain in this business anymore.
