Originally this cartoon had a GM logo where the "Auto Industry" currently sits, but my editorial page editor said they had problem targeting one manufacturer and so I made the adjustment you see here. It really doesn't matter that much to me, because the point I am trying to make here can be applied to The Big Three North American automakers.
The fact of the matter is that The Big Three squandered the good times away. Instead of focusing in on quality and smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles, they produced monster V-8 trucks and SUVs for the short-sighted North American consumer. Once oil prices went through the roof, people stopped buying all those behemoths and opted for better-built Japanese cars. Did they not learn anything from the early 1980s? Apparently not!
Then there's the quality issues, which I won't get into here. Suffice to say, the Japanese and Germans are way ahead in that department.
It will now be our patriotic duty to rescue these greedy morons to the tune of billions of dollars handed out in an attempt to save them from Chapter 11. I thought I already helped them when I bought the last two GM products, both of which are prime examples of poor quality.
