It's funny how things come out at the most opportunistic times.
Take for instance the recent flap over Stephen Harper's Iraq speech in which he clearly mimics an earlier speech by Australian PM, John Howard. I'm thinking the Liberals had this tucked away for just the right moment -- in this case, a few days before the leaders' debate.
I'm wondering about the best way for Stephane Dion to take advantage of this during the debate. I can already hear the retort: "Now, is that your opinion, Mr. Harper, or John Howard's?" Harper has left a huge hole for Dion to deliver a knock-out punch during a televised debate. That said, we all know Stephane Dion couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag.
It really is a solid case. If you follow
the video, it's pretty much a slam-dunk. It's unfortunate for Harper because it makes him look like he is unable to find his own voice and at the very least, it's a major embarrassment.
No doubt, the opposition leaders are going to ride this one for all its worth. I doubt they'll make that a great an impact with voters since plagiarism is becoming almost tolerated in this "anything goes" culture.
Heck, we're talking about a populace that almost put the Liberals back in power after having crooks in the party steal taxpayers' money for work never done. A little thing like stealing a speech isn't going to deter voters.
You can always count on apathetic and amoral Canadian voters. Politicians know this.
